A VERY good Philly in a fun location just off of Saint Augustine's main drag. South-A-Philly bills itself as an authentic Philly restaurant, hence the name, but as I have never been to Philadelphia I can only compare it to the many many other Phillies I've had over the years. This one definitely ranks near the top. I had the basic Philly, with Cheez Whiz, of course (I've been told that's authentic), which also included the steak, and on which I had peppers and onions. The sandwich was a nice size, juicy, and absolutely delicious. The fries, unfortunately, aren't offered in a combo meal, but they really are just plain fries anyway. Nothing special. Coca-Cola products are in the fountain, but I was a little annoyed with the sign saying only one free refill per customer. I understand it is a tourist town though, so maybe they have problems with freeloaders. The staff weren't very friendly, but maybe that is the Yankee attitude of real Philly people. It wasn't unbearable or anything, so not a deal breaker. The restaurant was pretty basic, but the walls had lots of cool Philly paraphernalia. All-in-all, I would absolutely return to this restaurant next time I'm in Saint Augustine. Great food and a cool place to watch a basketball game.

I was here on the 4th of July. We were there to watch the fireworks, but there was still plenty of time and we were hungry. As the sit down restaurants in the area all had a 2-3 hour wait time, I decided to just get a sandwich-to-go here. I ordered a philly cheesesteak with provolone. That alone cost me $10! I guess the peppers and onions were extra, which doesn't make ANY sense. That's like offering coffee and charging for cream and sugar. WTF Anyways, so I paid and stood around holding a number for a good 45 minutes before I got my food. I kept contemplating handing back the number and getting my money back because it was taking so friggin long. I was thinking, "This had better be the best cheesesteak EVER," but when I took a bite, I was really disappointed. The meat wasn't seasoned at all and the bread was hard and difficult to bite off. The whole thing just tasted like cardboard. Waste of my time and money. On top of that, it gave me the runs. I'm never eating their crap again.

Fried Pickles! This place is famous for their sandwiches and Golden Monkeys. I came here for their fried pickles. One of the few Southern fried foods I will ever bring to my lips. The stay open late till 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. Friendly staff. Incredibly sweet owners. Go see this place!

Philly native highly impressed with this spot. It's the BEST CHEESESTEAK you're going to get in Florida. The owner is super cool, they show Phillies games, and it's a great place to meet people from up north if you're new to St. Augustine. IT'S NOT FROM PHILLY IF THE BAG AIN'T GREASY GET OVER IT

Delicious-o cheesesteaks, and they put cheez whiz on them! I flippin love cheez whiz (gross..? I know :D) I had to wait outside with my pups while the husband ordered our meals. He said it took awhile and it wasn't even crowded, I suppose this is the only down fall for them. Cheesesteak was yummy and cheesy (2 things that I love!) and the curly fries were yum to :)

I truly enjoyed my sandwich while at this restaurant. My husband and I love to play pinball and when looking up places to play we were pleasantly surprised they had our most FAVORITE machine. This was our third visit and it won't be our last. The owners are very nice and easy going. We were there on our anniversary on the 26th to play a couple of games before heading to a friend's birthday party. We went back on the 28th to eat and play. I ate a Turkey Hoagie and hubby had a Reuben. Both had good flavor and were made to order. First time we went we both had PhillySteak sandwiches and I ordered Sweet potato fries (loved them) and hubby had the onion rings. Next time we go to play, I will order something different to try because I want to taste more of their food. Good simple food. Nice clean place. Definitely going back soon.

Umm...if you're looking for greasy french fries, mediocre hogie sandwiches, and Caesar salads with croutons from the box, then you've come to the right place. ...but if you're looking for a quick bite, you might as well find a sit down restaurant. It's not bad. It's not great. You can make this food at home. What's killer is the ridiculous wait time - and really, I swear to you, I don't usually give two licks about service.

Two BIG thumbs up on the cheesesteaks, curly fries and service! We will be back, oh yes, we will be back!

Small portions. What my friends and I ordered here was a joke for portions size and price considering the amount of food/ Not as great as I would have thought. Not only that but a poor delivery person.

Man, that was good stuff. Awesome bread with that crispy outside and chewy inside texture. And of course they use the cheese wiz, which is a must if you want a real cheesesteak. I was surprised however that if I wanted to add a side of sweet potato fries, I would have to fork over an additional $4.00. Maybe it's a big portion or something... Would be nice if they had an option for a half sandwich with a normal side of fries for 6-7$, but hey it's FL. Also the sandwich could use more meat to be a really awesome cheesesteak. Well, at least the service was friendly. And heck yeah, the sandwich was tasty!

Good Food, Friendly Staff. I never had a Philly Sandwich and it was really good I had it exactly as stated on the menu and was satisfied with the marriage of flavors. The portions of meat are not abundant but the meat was very tender so I would say it was quality over quantity. Would definitely go back for more :-D

South of Philly yes that sub shop with the great service NOT... Be surprised if they are in business next season unless they have deep pockets to keep them afloat. While on one of my visits I called I heard this was a new place and like I say I will try anything once sometimes I wish that was not true! Ok so I call to get 2 subs and some wings ( I think, I try and forget places that are 'OFF THE CHARTS") The phone rang and rang must have rang I guess more than 10 times so I hung up and called back thinking I called the wrong number and a lady answers the phone and she says " I will get some one to take your order " Now I am really a patient person but, this is getting ridiculous I thought I was on one of those TV shows and I was being "Punked or on some hidden camera show. So I figure I will play along finally another lady comes on she" says just a moment". She comes back and finally I order give her my address my phone and even tell her how to more easily find the place where I am located here we go again " she says something like we are out of that" or something like that".. After all that I say just forget it and hung up as I start looking for another place to get food the phone rings and a man says " Why do you not want your order" As if you are going to take the order whether you want to or not ! Must be that Philly attitude ? YES THAT IS GOING TO MAKE IT IN A LAID BACK CITY AS St Augustine well...NO All I said was " you must be kidding" and turned the phone off I had wasted way to much time to be on that reality show! So if your looking for a place that will give you everything but, what you called for be my guest!!!

My partner and I went here 4th of July weekend to check out the cheesesteaks. First, I will admit that I'm a cheesesteak purist in that I grew up in South Jersey and spent many summers eating cheesesteaks at the shore. So when I see a place that serves provolone (unless it's a pizzasteak), or worse, swiss, on a cheesesteak, it makes me cringe. Pros: 1) The menu at this place is correct in that they offer things that you would find on any grill menu in Philly or South Jersey. 2) Terrific pizza fries. The red sauce on them is slightly sweet and balances the salt of the fries nicely. 3) Great rolls, which I discovered are the same kind used at the famous White House sub shop in Atlantic City. 4) The cheesesteak was a solid 3.5 out of 5. The cheese was cooked/chopped in with the steak meat on the grill so you get some cheese in every bite. My only complaint was that the meat is not sliced as thinly as I like and is closer to roast beef sandwich thickness. But the flavor is there and it definitely satisfies my craving for a cheesesteak. 5) They have tastykakes! 6) The person serving us was the owner's daughter and she came over to our table to ask how things were and ended up chatting with us awhile during a lull in service. I enjoy personable service so this is a plus for me. Cons: 1) Really the only one I can think of was already mentioned above with regard to the thickness of the steak meat. That and maybe that the prices seemed a bit higher than what I'm used to when in Philly or Jersey (I guess that's what happens when you have little competition). Bottom line: If you are looking for something that is authentic from the Philly area, you probably can't get better in the JAX/St. Augustine area. Another reviewer said that it is no better than a Subway or Quiznos and missed the point of what this place is intended to be. I would say it isn't comparable to either in that it serves a different niche sandwich selection. Also, the lunch meat is of better quality than the chain places and it is mom & pop owned. So for what it is supposed to be, i.e., a Philly sandwich shop, they do a very good job. The next time I have a craving for sandwiches from Philly, I'm heading there.

The cheese steak sandwiches are absolutely delicious! You MUST MUST have your cheese steak with Cheese Wiz. That is how I ordered it and the owner came to our table to chat and convinced the other person in my party (who ordered her cheese steak with provolone and turned up her nose to the idea of the cheese sauce) and changed her entire world. She is a picky eater and regretted that she hadn't trusted my suggestion of ordering it with the Wiz at the beginning.

The service and food are the best! I have eaten many things off the menu and think the steak subs are fantastic and now I am enjoying their meaty buffalo wings. A neat stop for great food.

YUMMMM! Recommend the American cheese, very tasty cheesesteaks. Owner was there, and very nice and friendly. We will be back!

South-A-Philly has a lot of nice things going for it: It's in a great little out of the way location, in the corridor behind the A1A. The A1A is big and flashy and attracts tourists' eyes, which means South-A-Philly isn't overcrowded. It's definitely inexpensive, with most items below seven dollars. The staff here is cool, a very laid-back bunch with a definite Philly attitude. And as far as the quality of the food, it's not bad! All that said, it is a sandwich shop. And, sure, the sandwiches are well made, definitely authentic, they're just sandwiches. The extras on the menu--fries, beers, all sorts of random chips and snacks--are nice, but in the end, the main sell of the restaurant, sandwiches, aren't exceptionally superior to those you could get at your average well-run Subway or Quizno's. Still, if you want a cheap bite and like to help out a local business, give these guys the visit. They deserve it.

Small place, big taste. Everyone in my group said the food was great, we thought the service was friendly, and very much worth the money. GREAT!

Being from Philly. Its as close as you will get in st. augustine for a cheesesteak!

I used to have them on my speed dial until we picked up the anchor from St. Augustine. They're willing to deliver to the Municipal Marina, which just added to the awesome. We had cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, and I'm no Philly native nor a real cheesesteak connoisseur, but from all accounts, they do a great job. Last I checked, their meat was cut a little thick for tradition, but I like it that way. I'm not ordinarily a fan of iceberg lettuce salads, but the onions and peppers they add make theirs a treat. The staff is all friendly and knowledgeable, and for Philly expats, they have TPR and Tastykake as well. Open late Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Very good Philly Cheese Steak sandwich and fries. The steak they use is very tender and tasty. The fries were cooked just like I like them, crispy. There are a lot of discount coupons circulating around St Augustine, so get one and give this place a try.

I'm from Brookhaven, PA and I have to say I feel like I'm at my grandmothers and my uncles at the stove making us cheesesteaks. The people that work here feel like family and the cheesesteaks taste homemade. I have had cheesesteaks that come close to home but this is Philly.

Great cheesesteak place in St. Augustine. Excellent cheesesteaks and cheese fries, 4 different pinball machines, a selection of beers on tap (including Victory's Golden Monkey), and most importantly.... WHIZ! It is reasonably priced food (counter service) with a clean eating area and friendly employees. I highly recommend South-A-Philly to any cheesesteak fans in the area.

  • John S.

The cheesesteaks here are really good... It's one of the best I've ever had... The wife and I also shared an order of fries with cheese whiz... The fries were okay, not not the best I've had, but good. The prices here are reasonable and the customer service was good.

HANDS DOWN the BEST Philly cheesesteaks outside of Philly!!! The customer service was outstanding! The owners were friendly and full of cheesesteak pride (they take this stuff very seriously!). We loved every last bite of our ooey gooey steaming hot cheese whiz Philly cheesesteak sandwich... And let's not forget the cheese fries, perfectly fried and bathed in a warm melted cheese sauce. Talk about comfort food at it's best!!! Almost forgot... Try to leave room for their funnel cake sticks or their variety of tastycakes for dessert. Then again, just do what we did and make complete gluttons of yourself and waddle on home fully stuffed and satisfied!

Ah-mazing cheesesteaks! I'm not from Philly, nor have I ever been to Philly, but I can tell you the cheesesteaks here rank high up on the list of the ones I have had in my lifetime! All of the sandwiches and other items on the menu are reasonably priced. You can eat for under $10 per person here. Hubby and I each got a cheesesteak and we shared an order of fries with cheese whiz. The fries were good, but the shining star was definitely the cheesesteak. They have fountain coke products and you serve yourself, but there's a sign on the machine stating only one refill per customer. I really hated this because hubby can drink his weight in soda. I spoke to the lady at the counter and she said he could have extra refills, so... problem solved. Which leads me to customer service. The employees here are wonderful. They are very friendly and go out of their way to make sure you are completely satisfied. The owners are actually from Philly, so these cheesesteaks are suppose to be totally authentic. Again, I've never been to Philly, so I can't really judge. I just know they are damn good! Stumbled upon this place thanks to the handy dandy Yelp app! Saw all the great reviews (plus we were looking for cheap eats) and this is where Yelp lead us. Thank you Yelp and thank you fellow Yelpers! We would have never found this great shop without you! If you find yourself in Historic St. Augustine looking for seriously good, cheap eats, make sure to check this place out. Support local businesses!

This is a great late night Spot that is open until 2 am in St Augustine. If you are craving a massive amount of junk food this is your place. They have it all anywhere from Philly Cheese Steaks, Wings, Cajun Spicy Fries, Funnel Cake Fries. I personally had the Cajun Spicy Fries which were delicious with a BLT. My Daughter had the fried pickles and if you are a pickle person then you will love them. I was happy this place was open because oddly enough on a Saturday Night a lot of the restaurants were closed. So great late night spot!

I had been dying to try this place because I'm a huge fan of sandwiches. But I made the mistake of ordering the chicken Philly, which was dry and tasteless. I ended up stealing half of my husband's steak sandwich, which was pretty good. But the place kind of grossed me out - it was dark and dirty and I just wasn't impressed with my meal.

    (2)
  • Angeleen A.

Loved that they deliver. The food is mediocre. Maimi subs has infinitely better Philly cheese steaks. Doesn't have much flavor to the sandwiches and they are Que boring.

It's great that even this far south I can get a taste of home! I got the chicken cheesesteak and it was awesome. They even deliver!

  • John H.

Mixed feelings on this review .... The taste of the food actually deserves 5 stars, BUT... For the prices they are charging, I would expect to get a cheesesteak that was similar in size to a real Philly cheesesteak ... Not HALF the size ... Very disappointing ....

  • Samantha V.

Despite the place being difficult to find (being hidden in another building with only a single, small sign indicating it's presence in the building), and having to park far away, the food was great. My husband and I shared a cheese steak and pizza fries. The cheese steak was tasty, it wasn't the best, but I had no complaints. The pizza fries were nothing special, but the main meal more than made up for it. It appears as though the restaurant limits you to one refill, so keep that in mind. The room is on the small side, but has at least one TV and several arcade machines to keep your kids busy while your chowing down. All in all, if I take another trip to St. Augustine I will definetly visit them again.

South-A-Philly has some appetizing American food. We had ordered fried pickles, a cheesesteak, a chicken cheesesteak, and fries. All items were absolutely delicious. If you are from Philly and/or know what a true Philly cheesesteak taste like this is not it even though it is still tasty. The nice thing about it is that they do not advertise it as a Philly cheesesteak but it is almost what you would expect from a place with Philly in the name. The decor is absolutely Philly with signed jerseys and memorabilia from almost every Philadelphia sports team. If you are planning on watching sports on one of their TVs you need to choose your seat wisely as not every table has this view. It also may be difficult to find if you haven't been before but it's worth the search at least once.

As a New Englander and the knower of good and bad philly's--- this place is the best you can find below Pennsylvania! The proportion is ideal, stacked high and full. Meat was tender and toppings you must have. Located inside the mall area where there really isn't anything going on though. I will always stop here for my lunches when in town!

  • Matthew W.

Hard as hell to find. It's on the corner in the yellow building. U have to walk inside the building and it's one of the shops inside. As far as the food goes, I had the cheese steak. The insides were good but the bread was nothing special. Almost tasted old. This could have been cause I went late at night. They had good beer selection/prices. The draft was $2 but it's a super small cup so don't get too excited. I would try the place again and give another star if the bread was better. Oh, good service as well.

Their cheesesteak sandwich has very good favor. But don't order their chicken wings. I will go back for their cheesesteak sandwich.

  • Brian L.

Yummy. Tasty. I loved the cheesesteak. Good! The onion rings are not the best deal though - pricey for like 6 rings. They're good. Go, if you're randy for a cheesesteak (when are you not?).
